..the electronic influence..
Black Lung - The Depopulation Bomb, The Disinformation Plague, Uncomfortable Questions for Comfortable People, rhic-edom. Progressive techno brilliance from David Thrussell (Snog, Soma) rising way above the dross. Black Lung's music is very dark with a strong cynical edge to it which is sometimes enhanced by the manic beats or else by the sparse noise landscapes. Even though there are no vocals a strong political message is always being conveyed.
Snog - Albums:Lies Inc, Dear Valued Customer Singles: Shop, Hey Christian God, Born To Be Mild, Cliche, The Future. This stuff is a bit more dance orientated but it is far from being mindless beats. The songs again have a message but are not as dark as Black Lung. If you ever get chance to go to a Snog gig, it is well worth it as they always have a brilliant sound as well as a great slide show. Wicked.
Soma - The Inner Cinema.
Go to International Mind Control Corporation for a couple of David Thrussell interviews and a complete discography for Snog, Soma & Black Lung, or try Soma for another interview and a couple of Soma audio samples. If Mr Thrussell continues to produce these amazing noises, he'll be fast approaching God status in this house. Which reminds Tim of his favourite Snog lyric for today 'Hey Christian God get out of my face, your Holy Ghost is a curse on the human race' (Look, I know Christian bashing is infantile but I'm still recovering from a Catholic upbringing and I just have trouble suppressing it occasionally - and I really only reserve it for the born-again fundamentalist types. I would never judge anybody on the basis of their religious beliefs. Swear to God.)
Sonic Sufi - Sacramental. Trance techno of the Australia meets Japan variety from the brilliant Psy-Harmonics label. The stand out track for me (Chris) would be Janken. Psy-Harmonics have also just released a great video called PsyVision featuring techno with computer animation - it has work by their best known artists including Sonic Sufi, Shaolin Wooden Men, Third Eye and Antediluvian Rocking Horse.
Antediluvian Rocking Horse - Music For The Odd Occasion. Positively weird. Challenging sonic experience to say the least.
Zen Paradox - Eternal Brainwave, From the Shore of a Distant Land, The Voyage. More brilliant Melbourne techno courtesy of Steve Law. Very danceable stuff but can get very hardcore sometimes in the sense of intense beats and noise landscapes.
Space Cat - Karraveth. Yet more Melbourne techno. More ambient and less rhythm orientated than the previous artists. Very relaxing but also keeps you listening as well as thinking.
Found this sample of some damn fine techno somewhere on the net but can't remember where or who it is. But have a listen. Great stuff. Download Sound bite (38k)
